I get asked this question all the time, what are categories & tags? And, how do I use them?

You might not even know they’re there or you’ve ignored them because you don’t know what they even are.

So let’s explore the difference and you can use them effectively to organise your content and help your readers find what they want really easily.


Let’s use the analogy of a book.

In a book, you have chapters that organise your content.

Think of Categories as a chapters of your blog. The topics that you are writing about.

So for example, because I blog about WordPress, my categories would be:

  • Blogging
  • Branding
  • Selling
  • Social Media
  • Web Design
  • Maintenance
  • Membership

You can also create sub categories.

Under social media I could have, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest e.g

I’d advise that you have no more than 10 categories as this makes it easier for your readers to find what they want.

You can also assign your blog post to multiple categories.


Think of tags as the index of your book. The words that describe what your chapter is about, in other words your blog post.

So for example, this blog post, my tags would be categories, tags, categories and tags, SEO, sorting your content, organising your content.

Your readers won’t see your tags (unless you want them to by using a tag cloud for example)

You can have up to a 1000 tags (not that I’d advise that of course!)

What is the difference?

The main difference between categories & tags is that you MUST use a category, you don’t have to use tags.

If you don’t assign your post to a category, WordPress will do it for you. under ‘uncategorised’ which isn’t helpful to you readers.

What about SEO?

By organising your content you will also help SEO for sure!

Always make it easier for your readers to navigate your website to help them find what they want.

Will it hinder your SEO if you don’t use them? No, but always use best practice.
